Sankara Academy of Ophthalmology, Sankara Eye Hospital has been functioning since 1997 as an exclusive eye care centre with a singular vision of providing high quality care to all segments of society, rich or poor. The large volume of patients who are seen by us at the Hospital and outreach camps makes our hospital an excellent institution. To impart practical education and training to young Ophthalmologists as well as Optometry students.
While hospitals have been established to provide eye care, the availability of skilled human resources in the form of Ophthalmologists and Optometric technicians has been a serious challenge.
Very early in our journey we recognized that we are perfectly positioned to address this demand gap in skilled resources.
Sankara Academy of Ophthalmology was setup to offer both short term and Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Speciality Fellowships to young Ophthalmologists. A well structured fellowship training programmes has been designed to develop manpower in the field of Ophthalmology. The programmes offer an excellent opportunity for young Ophthalmologists to gain practical expertise in medical and surgical management of patients. Currently the Academy runs the following programs:

- Diplomate in National Board (DNB) in Opthalmology accredited to National Board of Examinations, New Delhi
- Long term Fellowship Programme in General Ophthalmology and Vitreo-Retina – 24 months
Dissemination of knowledge and skills in eye care will not only satisfy the needs of the institution but also take care of the needs of the country. Pammal Sankara trains with the state-of-the-art techniques in management of cataracts.
As of December 2021, the Academy has trained over 150 people in various disciplines.. Our students include some from friendly foreign countries like Nigeria, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, USA and UK.
Continuing Medical Education programmes by the eminent speakers are offered on a regular basis. The hospital offers the ophthalmologists both from India and abroad an opportunity to improve their capacity to provide high volume, high quality care and enabling them to become self-reliant.
The Hospital has been conducting B Sc Optometry courses from 2004 in affiliation with Sri Chandrasekaraendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya (Kanchi University) under the name Jayendra Institure of Medical Science (JIMS). In 2014, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Institute of Optometry was setup to offer UG and PG courses in Optometry in affiliation with Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. Since 2019, the Institute is affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr M G R Medical University, Chennai under Allied Health Science.
