Dr.Surendranatha Reddy, MBBS, DOMS, Fellowship in Diseases and surgery of the Retina & Vitreous at Melbourne – Medical Director (Vitreo-Retina services)

Fondly addressed as SNR, Dr. Surendra N. Reddy, has been instrumental in the evolution of Sankara Eye Hospital from a Cataract surgical Centre to a multi specialty tertiary care Institution and a post graduate training center. A graduate of Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada, AP. India, SNR served as a GP under the Ministry of Health, Algeria until 1984, first 4 years in the Northern Mediterranean terrain and the final 2 years, by his own choice, opted to the rural population of Fenoughil, a remote commune in the deep SAHARA desert.

On his return to India in mid1984, he completed ophthalmology training at the JJM medical college, Davangere, Karnataka in June 1987. He developed a passion for Retina, and had initiation to the subspecialty while working as a fellow and then as a junior consultant at THE EYE RESEARCH FOUNDATION, Chennai until 1990.

Subsequently moved to Melbourne, to train as a Fellow in the diseases and surgery of the Retina and vitreous under Dr.James D.Cairns at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, until mid 1994.

Upon his return to India in mid 1994, Dr SNR served as a visiting consultant at the MV diabetes specialty center, Apollo Hospital and Chennai Kaliappa Hospital, until opting out of private Medical practice in mid 2003.

A chance meeting of SNR with a former colleague and the managing Trustee of the Sankara Foundation in 2005,came as an eye opener to the world of under privileged people in dire need of sight Restoration. With a high level of self motivation and personal commitment to the cause of the poor, SNR joined Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal in Nov 2005 to set up the Retinal department with funding and support from the SIGHTSAVERS INTERNATIONAL.

Ever since, he has been exclusively practicing surgical retina dealing with Retinal reattachment surgeries for Retinal detachments from various causes : most notably the complicated Retinal detachments arising out of proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy / injuries and Trauma / complications arising out of cataract surgeries / chronic recurrent retinal detachments / paediatric Retinal detachments from various causes / macular diseases etc. and has been extending Retinal surgical training for fellows interested in this faculty.

The availability of such a dedicated and experienced surgeon proved invaluable for the Hospital.
