1984

Sri Sankara Health Centre established OP Clinic know as “One Rupee Hospital”

1988

Sri Appasamy Iyer gifted 26000 sq ft land in Sri Sankara Nagar

1990

20-bed general hospital commissioned through Rotary Club of Meenambakkam

1993

Hospital upgraded to 60 beds

1994

HH Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal launched “Kannoli” – Vision saver project of Rotary Club of Madras Fort

1997

Hospital handed over on lease to Sankara Nethralaya as an exclusive Ophthalmic Hospital. Outreach camps continued to be done by us

1997

Sankara Health Centre moved to temporary building in Pammal and continued as a OP Centre

1997

Project “Oli Padaitha Kanninai” (Divine vision) launched with support from District Collector, Tiruvallur to screen school children in Government schools in the District

1999

Sankara Nethralaya terminated their MoU prematurely. We decided to forge ahead on our own with support from Dr RV Ramani

2000

School screening project renamed as “Vanavil”. 250,000 students were screened in this year alone

2004

50,000th Cataract surgery was performed

2005

Government accreditation received for conduct of DNB training

2006

Medical Retina Services introduced

2007

Surgical Retina services started

2008

Eye Bank Services launched

2010

Paediatric Ophthalmology and Orbit and Oculoplasty departments opened

2011

Sankara Academy of Ophthalmology was started to provide short term and long term Fellowship training.

2013

BSc and MSc Optometry courses introduced in affiliation with Bharathiar University

2014

Bhoomi Puja performed to set up an eye Hospital in Samarjhola, Odisha

2014

Branch Hospital opened in Nanganallur, Chennai

2016

Hospital received Pre-accreditation Entry Level certification from NABH

Vision Centre supported by Sightsavers opened at Old Washermanpet

2017

Vision Centre supported by Sightsavers opened at Berhampur in Odisha

Vision Centre shifted to Perambur due to very poor response at old Washermanpet

Truck Drivers Screening started with support from Sightsavers

Vision Centre set up with support from Sightsavers at Madhavaram Truck terminal exclusively for Truck drivers

Vision Centre supported by Sightsavers opened at Chatrapur, Odisha

Vision Centre setup within Sankara Multispeciality Hospital, Kanchipuram

Vision Centre setup in Triplicane in partnership with SYMA

2020

BSc and MSc Optometry courses affiliated with Tamilnadu Dr MGR Medical University

March 2021

Initiated to setup 40 Orange Vision Centres in 7 districts of Tamil Nadu with the equipment support of Rotary International
